Google names the Android software for watches (and wearables) — “Android Wear“.

“We’ve barely scratched the surface of what’s possible with mobile technology,” Google said in a post on its official blog. “That’s why we’re so excited about wearables — they understand the context of the world around you, and you can interact with them simply and efficiently, with just a glance or a spoken word.”

Engadget first to announce the news

In early March at South by Southwest, Google announced SDK tools for developers:

“The tools will be available to download in roughly two weeks time and will expand efforts to put Google’s mobile OS on smart watches, fitness bands and expand developers’ ability to harvest data from sensors of any kind on the body.”
